\nUnder the patronage of the Ministries of Energy and Economy & Industry, the General Organization of Geology and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Saudi company SAMIROCK to launch a project using oil shale to produce diammonium phosphate (DAP).
\nThe MoU, signed at the Ministry of Energy building in Damascus in the presence of officials including Assistant Minister of Energy for Planning and Institutional Excellence Eng. Ibrahim Al-Adhan and Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Basel Abdel Hanan, stipulates studying the investment of oil shale in Khanasser, in the Aleppo countryside, for the production of phosphate fertilizers, supporting the development of the local fertilizer industry.
\nAssistant Minister of Economy and Industry Mohammad Yassin Hourieh emphasized the importance of the MoU as a strategic step, given the significant economic benefits of this resource. He noted that the project would contribute to revitalizing the region, which has been heavily affected in recent years.
\nHe added that the MoU includes conducting geological, technical, and economic studies to assess the feasibility of exploiting oil shale and phosphate rocks to produce diammonium phosphate.
\nFor his part, Ibrahim Babli, Vice Chairman of SAMIROCK, explained that the agreement aims to establish a phosphate fertilizer industry based on the oil shale deposits in Khanasser, considered among the best in the Arab region in terms of quality and quantity. He highlighted that phosphate fertilizers are among the most important agricultural inputs with strong global demand.
\nOsama Mahmoud, Director General of the General Company for Phosphates and Mines, stated that the MoU represents an important step toward investing Syria\u2019s natural resources, including producing fertilizers based on oil shale reserves, with the proposed project location in Khanasser subject to technical and economic studies.
\nThe Saudi company specializes in mining, geological surveying, exploration, drilling operations, and heavy equipment trading, with extensive experience and commitment to international standards and innovative technologies.
\nThe phosphate sector is one of the key pillars of Syria\u2019s mineral wealth.
